Here comes Aphrodite as Phuket's entertainment industry enjoys expansion

New Phuket City 'Aphrodite Cabaret' On The Way

Wednesday, June 15, 2011
PHUKET: Here comes the Aphrodite Cabaret Show - proof that Phuket is the home of katoey entertainment, and further evidence of Phuket's rapid growth.

Look for the sequins and the feather boas to be flying soon.

Aphrodite is coming to the old Phuket Brewery site in Phuket City, a first-class venue that has so far struggled to find the right kind of entertainment to make it a going concern.

''Come to the cabaret'' will be the new cry when the katoey shows begin in August of September at the latest.

About 80 performers will be employed, most from Bangkok but also with some from Phuket, along with another 100 support staff.

The coming of Aphrodite may have nudged the popular katoey show Simon Cabaret in Patong to declare recently that it also plans Phuket City performances.

Phuket Aphrodite manager Siri Jaringtakul told Phuketwan that the old Phuket Brewery venue, in the bypass road opposite the Tesco-Lotus supermarket, would be modified to seat 900 patrons.

A restaurant out front will also be revived, probably serving Korean buffet-style meals.

The venue's new operators have experience in cabaret in Bangkok, but Phuket's Aphrodite is a new brand, Khun Siri said.

The Phuket Brewery, with seating at tables for 2000 diners on two levels, opened in November 2008 and was then revived in January 2010 as the rock music Whisky and Moonlight (Long Lao Sang Chan) venue.

The manager said when the venue closed in May last year: ''Phuket may not be big enough just yet. And the place itself? It is too big.''

Also coming later this year to Phuket City is Siam Niramit Phuket, a rival to Kamala's award-winning Phuket FantaSea attraction.

As Phuketwan reported back in October last year, the Siam Niramit will cost $40 million, with seating for 1500.

''Think Cirque de Soleil plus Italian grand opera and classical Thai dance dressed by Las Vegas costumers and staged by Hollywood," said one reviewer of the Bangkok version.
Phuket Falls Silent as Brewery Music Stops
Latest Phuket has proven itself to be a difficult market to figure with the Phuket Brewery music venue closing for the second time. A third opportunity seems unlikely for now.

Excepted katoey shows, girly bars, Thai massage shops offering short-time sex for money and beer bars, Phuket lacks imagination to attract quality tourists...

Bali businessmen are smiling about Thailand attractiveness.

It's not in Phuket City. It's actually on the border between Samkong and Kathu, technically in Kathu. It's opposite Tesco Lotus, and on the other side of the road across from Tesco is a sign that clearly reads Samkong. Phuket City proper is a good 5 km away. I know because I live 2 minutes up the street.

Samkong is a suburb of Phuket City and Kathu is rapidly becoming one.

Why would the restaurant serve Korean Buffet meals?
This is Thailand and they should serve Thai Buffet meals.
Are these meals included in the ticket price I wonder?

Naturally they serve Korean food, because it's just 1 minute down the street from the Index Living Mall where Korean tour buses stop outside every day. Hundreds of Koreans eat at Oishi in Index mall every day. Now they want to steal them to this new katoey venue. However, they'll fail (Koreans don't like katoeys). Katoey cabaret in Patong, yes. In Phuket City, no way in hell.

"Katoey cabaret in Patong, yes. In Phuket City, no way in hell."

I would tend to agree. No room in Phuket for 2 of the same, and Simon Cabaret has been there so long and has the right location. Unless the new place has made deals with big tour agencies to bring 'em in by the bus load...

Was a pity that the original Brewery failed. I liked it, went to a couple of concerts, but the manager is right - Phuket is not big enough for such a large venue which was aimed mostly at local people.
