NEW company registrations for January 2009 were down by 27 percent from January last year, figures from the Phuket Provincial Business Development Office show.
Ninety-nine new limited companies were registered last month compared with 136 in January 2008.
Limited partnership registrations show an even more marked rate of decline, with 17 limited partnerships registered in January 2009, compared with 38 registered in January 2008.
Existing businesses appear to be holding steady, with a total of 34 limited companies closed down last month, the same figure as January last year.
The business development office collected 3 million baht in registration fees this January, down from 4 million in January 2008.
In the first quarter of the fiscal year starting October 2008 to the end of December 2008, the BDO collected a total of 12 million baht in fees.
For 2008's fiscal year, from October 2007 to end of September 2008, 51.4 million baht was collected, an average of 12.85 million per quarter.
Phuket BDO Chief Weerachai Tantiwatthanawallop told Phuketwan that the global economic downturn and political turmoil have contributed to the decline in business.
Even so, Phuket remains as one of the top-five provinces for investment in Thailand, he said.
Of the total 14712 companies registered in Phuket, property is the most common type of company in the province, followed by tourism service businesses, house and home businesses, construction companies and general service businesses.
Khun Weerachai says that his office has been tasked with promoting business growth by setting up a consulting team to provide a "Business Clinic" to investors seeking advice and information on establishing a new business in Phuket.
The clinic has recently been granted approval by Phuket Governor Dr Preecha Ruangjan, who this week brought many business leaders together to discuss ways to boost the economy.
