Phuket's Sarasin Bridge in the midst of its makeover last month

Phuket Bridge Opening Delayed Because of Downpours

Monday, July 18, 2011
PHUKET: The opening of the new bridge linking Phuket to mainland Thailand has been postponed to a date to be fixed.

The Director of Phuket Highways, Arun Sanae, told Phuketwan today that heavy rain had delayed constuction and the project would not be ready to open as scheduled on July 20.

''It's sad but there is nothing we can do about the weather,'' he said.

At present, motorists leaving the island are being diverted onto the Thepkasattri Bridge, which in normal circumstances carried one-way traffic onto Phuket from the neighboring province of Phang Nga.

Work on the new bridge at a cost of 377 million baht began on June 30, 2009. It replaces Sarasin Bridge, the one-way link off Phuket.

As the new unnamed bridge is being constructed, the central portion of the Sarasin Bridge is being lifted so that yachts can pass underneath without lowering masts. The development is expected to be a boon for Phuket's east coast marinas, enabling faster sailing between Phang Nga Bay and the Andaman Sea.

The Sarasin Bridge, popular with anglers and with many romantic associations with Phuket's history, will be turned into a tourist attraction. The raised central section will be topped by a sala and allow visitors to enjoy excellent views towards the Andaman, especially at sunset.

Businesses on the small beaches at either end of the three bridges are expected to benefit as Phuket's road entry and exit point becomes a place where some visitors will stop to enjoy their first or last Phuket sunset.

"It's sad but there is nothing we can do about the weather"

Aside from like 2 wet days at the end of last week, the weather during the low season has been great, can't use the weather as an excuse! or maybe it's too hot and the workers need to take siestas?

Editor Comment:

Inferences of slackness and siestas without evidence seem unjustified and unfair to me, given that the contract probably stipulates when the bridge needs to be finished and the builder has a good reputation. Isn't it it a characteristic of Phuket's weather, Jamie, that you may have only had a few wet days in the south on the west coast, while another part of the island could have had two or three times that much? Half the bridge is in Phang Nga. Perhaps Phang Nga's weather has been far, far wetter.

I believe you previously had an article on here stating that the official opening date was in June? As much as you would like to argue most government projects on the island (and just off it being pedantic) do run behind schedule.

You must have some less reliable site in mind. Our June 1 article said that July 20 would be the opening date. I am not saying that projects don't slip behind schedule but siestas are usually not the cause. It's not directly related, but more than once I've been surprised to see grass cutters on the road in Phang Nga continuing to work through heavy rain.

Oh here we go Editor, never wrong.

"Half the bridge is in Phang Nga" - ah yes, I see, the weather and rainfall changes as you cross the bridge, right? Rainfall on the south end of the bridge is vastly different to the north end? Anyone can see the weather is being used as an excuse and please don't be so sensitive, I was attempting to be "light hearted". Look it up in a dictionary and thank you I know more about the weather than you do.

Editor Comment:

Every Phuket weather expert knows it's possible to have one half of a bridge soaking wet and the other half perfectly dry, Jamie. Why doesn't your lightness of heart extend to others?

Actually, blaming bad weather is a valid excuse. There has been more rain in the north of Phuket than in the south. Also strong winds which make working on a bridge quite hazardous. As for the workers being lazy, there are more than enough to cover for them in case the boss turns up.

One thing I would like to know is if the northern access to the bay is real or not. Many times when I go over the bridge, I see rough surf off to the left (going toward Phang Na). So it looks very shallow.

@GiantFan
The sea mouth here is very treacherous most of the time. Very strong currents and also very shallow there. At night it is a no go zone for the sane, thai fishing boats however . . . 'nuf said.

yes was wondering if there is a plan to dredge the bar..It would be madness to suggest that a keel boat could cross at present.although just wait some tourist/charterer may just try.
...maybe an Oregon or Australian type surf fishing boat or the like could do it at the right state of tide..

I am from Norway and one of those bridges we build on the 7 to 8 months we have winter up to -20 to 30 degrees, in summer we use a little less time. start and take the tax for each car 20 Baht to come to Phuket and put money back in and create better roads in Phuket.
