KRABI now has a second golf course, this one nine holes, positioned alongside the large Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra Resort and Spa on Khlong Muang beach.
When Phuketwan last dropped by, the course was still under construction. Now promotions are underway to attract the niche golfing market, especially from Bangkok.
On one side of the course are views across the Andaman Sea, with steeply rising Naga Head Mountain on the other.
Supachai Verapuchong, Managing Director of Phokeethra Group Ltd. Co, said the course was short but challenging, with diverse terrain and ''exciting golfing opportunities.''
''With the world-renowned luxury of Sofitel next door, golfers can enjoy delicious specialty cuisine and unwind with a relaxing spa treatment within minutes of finishing their game,'' he said.
According to promoters, the par 28 course winds its way through lakes and streams as it climbs from the beachside along a hillside slope, ''becoming progressively more challenging and interesting.''
''A golfer will find plenty of water hazards and ambushing bunkers, tough putting challenges and tricky approaches,'' the media release says.
While the beaches along the Krabi coast do not match those of Phuket, the coastal mainland province abounds in stunning scenery and out-of-the-way resorts.
Launch of the Krabi course follows the success of the Phokeethra Group's first golfing facility, Phokeethra Country Club, in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
The 18-hole course played host to the Cambodia Open 2007, the first tournament of its kind to be held in that country.
It's the second nine-hole course to open in the Andaman region this high season.
The nine-hole Phunaka Golf Course, with a two-level driving range and a golf academy, offers low-cost golf in Chalong.

Krabi Builds Marina, Lanta Bridge to Future
Take a Photo Tour Krabi is more go-ahead than it seems with improved roads and a bridge on the way to link two key islands. A white wat is a surprise attraction, and a marina is likely soon.
