Phuket City's Thavorn Grand Hotel, awaiting a new owner

Grand Phuket Hotel Auctioned in Central Phuket City

Wednesday, October 5, 2011
PHUKET: Bidding closed at 4pm yesterday for the historic Thavorn Grand Hotel, a Phuket City landmark since 1992.

Built at a cost of a billion baht, the 17-storey, 154 room five-star is now for sale by ACAP, which purchased the property from the Dhilok Group.

The reserve price is set at 420 million baht.

It's an unusual offering for Phuket because a massage shop alongside the Thavorn Grand is also up for sale. That establishment of a spacious 112 rooms is for sale at 60 million baht.

The hotel occupies 5.2 rai while the massage centre stands on two rai. Bidders have been able to apply to buy both titles, or put up separate offers.

The Dhilok Group's Thavorn Hotel and Resort arm still owns the Thavorn Beach Village, the Thavorn Palm Beach and the Nakalay Spa on Phuket.

Please don't hold us in suspense. Tell us who won the jackpot or is that a secret or it didn't make reserve? The knock shop next door seems better value at 30 mill per rai for inner city land.

One of the finest grand hotels in Phuket, and one where I always stayed for months on end until a few years ago. I can't believe the reserve price on this 5-star property is so low. The market has really fallen flat.

I assume the hotel was self-rated as 5 star. Most hotels in Thailand barely scrape the Holstars 2 star rating and call themselves 4 or 5 star.

But hey, it sounds good right? Even the 6/7 stars which don't exist are out there.

Depends where you spend your time, Tbs. There are plenty of genuine four and five-star resorts on Phuket. With Internet feedback forums, not too many two-stars anywhere can pass themselves off as better quality and get away with it.
