MORE than 100 land owners turned out yesterday to discuss the governor's plan for a second highway between the airport and Phuket City.
One owner, the subject of a Department of Special Investigations probe on land elsewhere, volunteered to give 40 rai to the project.
Most of the owners agree with the concept of giving the land for use as a highway, figuring it would leave them with other land of increased value because of the new thoroughfare.
However, some owners do not have large plots and would find the concept less workable.
Among those with land to spare is the Tantipiriyakit family, who have substantial holdings across three provinces: Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi.
The DSI is looking at the family's holdings of 500 rai on Kho Yao Yai, off Phuket's east coast.
The Governor of Phuket, Wichai Praisa-nob, said that he was pleased the second highway plan was proceeding well in terms of the number of owners who were willing to give land.
He chaired the meeting at Provincial Hall.
Investigations are going on to see whether those who had little land to give would be happier with alternative plots elsewhere.
''Most people agree with the project because it has obvious benefits for the future of Phuket,'' the governor said.
The second highway would run to the west of the existing highway and it is seen as the means to ease future congestion on the island's main artery.
Sometimes road-bulding brings stayputs who decline to become involved, as with a Rawai landowner who declined to sell.
The consequence is that Viset Road, the main road between Chalong Circle and Rawai, narrows by one lane then resumes full width after the small property.
The Bypass Road to Phuket City and the south of the island from Thepkasattri Road was built to ease congestion on the then existing main road in similar circumstances.
