PHUKET: TWO giant resort brands are expanding on Phuket with the island's first Hyatt and its third Centara Grand now announcing opening dates.
Hyatt is due to open along Phuket's Millionaire's Mile near Kamala in late 2013 while the Centara Grand Moringa Resort and Spa Phuket is scheduled to open in August next year, south of Patong.
The Centara Grand consists of 350 villas and rooms set around a natural lake, according to a billboard not far from the proposed site.
The expanding Thai brand already has a Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket at Karon and a Centara Grand West Sands Resort and Villas Phuket at Mai Khao, near Phuket International Airport.
The new Hyatt Regency will be Phuket's first, following a management agreement with Kamala Bay Ventures Co Ltd.
Ratnesh Verma, senior vice president, real estate and development, Asia Pacific for Hyatt Hotels & Resorts, said today: ''We are excited to bring the Hyatt Regency brand to one of the region's most sought after resort destinations.
''We are honored to further strengthen our relationship with Kamala Bay Ventures Co., Ltd., which through its affiliates is also the owner of Park Hyatt Siem Reap and Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa.''
Overlooking Kamala Bay and the Andaman Sea, the Hyatt will offer impressive connections to the ''bustling areas of the island,'' says a media release.
The resort will feature 202 guestrooms, in addition to more than 4300 square feet of meeting facilities, three food and beverage outlets, a club lounge, fitness center, outdoor swimming pool, and spa.
As of March 31, the company's contract base consisted of approximately 200 hotels across all brands and regions in which Hyatt hotels operate.
Centara, perhaps because the brand has become such a familiar feature on Phuket, was far more coy.
Over several days, Phuketwan's attempts to find out more failed.
But the new resort is, according to a billboard, going to be built at the southern end of Patong Bay on the headland behind Amari, most likely before Tri Trang beach.
The billboard says the Centara Grand Moringa Resort & Spa Phuket will consist of 350 villas and rooms, a natural lake, several themed restaurants, an enchanting spa, ultimate luxury, giant pool and water features, and tropical forest.
Centara was Business of the Year 2010 in Phuketwan's Best of Phuket Awards.
