THE 'Colorful Countdown to 2009' ended last night after 12 nights with a giant rock concert in the heart of Phuket City, with thousands of fans cheering some of Thailand's top pop artists.
Young fans lined the barricades early in the evening, looking out for their idols.
Some of the island's leading dignitaries, including the Governor, Dr Preecha Ruangjan, were fortunate enough to share the stage with the stars.
Local fashion designers and performers also strutted their wares and talents, as the giant countdown clock ticked on.
At midnight, there was a burst of fireworks, and the concert kicked on with the spectacle growing more exciting in 2009 than it had been in 2008.
Everyone voted the countdown, which closed the Surin Circle outside the Meropole Hotel to traffic, a huge success.
Organisers estimated the crowd in the streets at more than 5000 in what was a very different welcome to the New Year to the one on the other side of the island, in Patong.
The island, loved by many, seems to have something for everyone, especially on New Year's Eve.
