DIVE delegates from around the world are already arriving to Phuket for the CMAS World Underwater Federation general assembly on May 2-9.
The gathering has been organised to elect a new board of directors and to celebrate the federation's 50th anniversary. Formed in Brussels in 1959, CMAS is one of the world's oldest scuba diving organizations.
Workshops on various aspects of diving and water sports, including spearfishing, aquathlon and finswimming, will be held throughout the week at the Phuket Orchid Resort in Karon.
Attending the assembly is Edgar Samuel Sharuk of Unesco Asia-Pacific, who will be presented with an environmental award from the Thai Diving Association and CMAS for Unesco's support on the Marine Scout Program and other projects.
Phuket Governor Wichai Praisa-Nob and Pramuke Achariyachai, owner of the Phuket Orchid Resort and a leading player in Phuket's tourism industry, are also set to join the event.
While the meeting is closed to the public, the week-long stay of hundreds of delegates and their families provides a much-needed lift at the start of Phuket's low season.
The event is being organised by the Thai Diving Association, which promotes safe and environmentally responsible diving.
The TDA is probably best known in Phuket for its articifical Sky Dive Reef, also known as the Coral Reef Squadron, in Bang Tao Bay. It was installed in November last year.
Four obsolete Dakotas and six helicopters that served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars were sunk in an elaborate operation that took two years to plan.
The reef is already a popular dive site, says TDA CEO Rainer Gottwald.
