Silk and Sunset Sounds Greet a Phuket Dream

PHUKET has some of the finest settings for fashion and food in the world, and as the island becomes more cosmopolitan, so urban dreams mesh with island reality. Once, it was the other way around.

Paradise these days, after all, comes in different shapes and sizes, off the rack or made to measure.

With Cafe del Mar guru Jose Padilla at the turntable and some cool swimwear on the improvised catwalk, Anantara Phuket Resort and Spa yesterday evening was definitely tailored to suit, hip and hot rather than hip-hop.

Balmy Phuket sunsets take some beating, as about 200 guests for the parade and dinner discovered alongside Mai Khao beach. And when the Godfather of musical sunsets meets Jim Thompson, then ''Silk Rhythms'' sums it up neatly.

Following on from Phuket's first fashion week earlier in the year, the innovation proved to be yet another groove track to be mixed with other bright ideas.

Phuketwan has long imagined the world's best chefs at work in kitchens under thatch on the region's most secluded beaches, serving up dishes to die for under the stars, with the sea beating in the background.

It's an island dream that perhaps came one step closer to reality last night.

Why arent there more Thai people in the Fashion shows? If I want to see fashion shows like this I can stay in Copenhagen. When I come to Thailand - the last thing I want to see are more westerners. Thailand is supposed to be an escape from westerners.
