What Phuketwan says:
When we arrived, the waiter was neatly polishing off a bottle of red. Then he put the polished-off bottle back on the shelf, and polished off another one, putting it back, dust-free. Sam's is the go-to place for a bit of polish in Patong. We've entertained friends there, and never had a meal that did not live up to expectations. Instead of having a less-than-great steak elsewhere, we have been known to save up for Sam's. Many resort restaurants struggle to attract customers because of the difficulty of getting through the resort to the restaurant. Sam's is an easy stroll through the gate on Patong's beach road, or even closer through the foyer. Little wonder it's classed as a local diner by many. But there's no thatch and bamboo to be seen here. The decor and the service are as polished as the wine bottles. A glass of house red or white is probably a good place to start, but there is a wide selection of good wines from which to choose. While Sam's is classy and the jazz is mellow and moody, it's never snooty. Although flip-flops are frowned upon, quality singlets from the top end of town have been known to pass the dress code here. To fully enjoy the atmosphere, most people enjoy a little night-time style. It goes without saying that the steaks here set the standard to beat on the island. If there's a better steak to be found, we are happy to go in search of it. As with most holidays in Patong, there is usually a happy ending at Sam's. The surprise is worth the wait. We won't spoil it.

How to find it: The Holiday Inn is among the best-known resorts in Patong and right on beach road.

Parking: An entrance off Rat-U-Tit 200 Pi Road, which runs parallel to beach road, has a small car park suitable for guests and diners.

Phuketwan reviewers pay for their own meals. If we don't, we tell you.

For probably the best steak on the island I'll head to the Locanda Restaurant located at the Bougainvillea Terrace House Resort, 86 Patak Road in Kata. Sam's is indeed a great place for steaks but Locanda is definitely up to the task. Check it out. You won't regret it.
