PHUKET Bike Week is becoming more than just a two-wheel festival of fun. A big bike ride, a music festival, and now the island's first Phuket International Tattoo Convention are creating their own excitement.
Phuket's tattoo first should not be confused with the Edinburgh Tattoo, a traditional military and music event in Scotland where bagpipes, artillery blasts and tartan kilts are the entertainment. It may be, of course, that some Scotsmen wear tattoos under their kilts, but that's for others to find out.
Tattoos have certainly become ubiquitous these days, a far cry from ''Mother'' on a rugged sailor's forearm or ''Love'' and ''Hate'' across the knuckles.
Actress Angelina Jolie, considered by many to be the world's most beautiful woman, has a few. Michelle ''Bombshell'' McGee, named as the other woman in the latest Hollywood scandal involving this year's Best Actress Oscar winner Sandra Bullock, has a few more.
''Bombshell'' is a tattoo model whose body markings are perhaps state of the art, and of wide appeal at present. Ms Jolie and Ms McGee are not expected to attend the first Phuket International Tattoo Convention, but it should be easy enough for someone who does go along to say: ''I want a tattoo just like hers.''
The Phuket convention, to be held at Jungceylon in Patong from April 6-8, will bring top tattoo designers from Thailand, Germany, Australia and Singapore to show off their wares in 30 booths.
Fantasy style, tribal style, even a white ink tattoo . . . there will be no shortage of body markings available.
Having led the world in body-piercing for generations with the annual Phuket Vegetarian Festival each October, it's appropriate that body art should make its mark on Phuket.
For those contemplating a tattoo that says ''I love Phuketwan,'' all we can suggest is that admission will be 150 baht, with tattoos extra, and a regular award for Best Tattoo of the Day.
Phuket's first tatto fest will segue straight into the music festival at Loma Park during Bike Week, which runs from April 9-13. A ride up from Malaysia is one of the many activities.

Photo Special Fortunately the rain (call it a water festival if you will) held off long enough for Bike Week to rev up and have a blast. Glowing machines and golden moments marked the start.

Perhaps we will see Jessie James (Mr. Bullock) on hand trolling for tattooed love girls. A short walk across the road to Bangla and he will find his hog heaven.
