At 65 baht, is the American breakfast here Phuket's best-value breakfast? We think so. If there's a better-priced breakfast that offers more, we haven't found it yet. The BBQ Ribs Texas (or maybe it's the Texas BBQ Ribs) is an offshoot from Steak Samkong, a well-known restaurant in Samkong that has been popular for many years. Owner Nantachat Julapadung worked on a cruise liner then came home to open SS in 1999. In a strange twist, he now competes with himself, especially at breakfast, just down the road at his rival restaurant. And boy, what competition over breakfast. At BRT (orTRB) the toast is served first, warm, and with butter and marmalade ready to spread. Then along comes the main course, with our drink of preference, an iced coffee. Some joints have actually charge extra for daring to order an iced coffee, but not here. And there are three or sometimes four pieces of different fruit as a palate cleanser. It's true that the orange juice is not a large glass, but there's plenty to start the day. You'll be eating here with Clint Eastwood, Yul Brunner and the Magnificent Seven staring down hungrily, along with a magnificent diagram showing cuts of beef from a cow. These include everything from rib, chuck, brisket, round and flank to sirloin and shortplate, as Clint or Yul could tell you. We were so shocked when we first encountered the breakfast at this price that we went back two days later and, sure enough, it was still at 65 baht and still great value. The ribs here at night are also tasty. We guess that's what comes with competion.

How to find it: Close to Wachira Hospital, Steak Samkong lies on a bend and the Texas BBQ Rib is about 100 metres further, on the other side of Yaowarat Road.

Parking: Usually plenty of space in the street.
