What this means is that they will dress in the style and manner of 19th century Chinese traders and their brides, the well-to-do local Thai maidens. Couples from Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taiwan are paying as much as 39,000 baht for the privilege of a traditional marriage.
The spectacle begins on Saturday, August 14 when between 4.30pm and 8.30pm the brides and the grooms prepare. Visitors are welcome to Hongyok House in Thepkasattri Road, home to the head of a noted Phuket family. In the evening, join the cocktail party for 200 baht.
On August 15, from 8am to 11am, there will be a parade of couple from the TAT offices in rickshaws to Hongyok House, with the governor and his wife heading the happy couples. At Hongyok House, there will be chanting and prayers.
From noon to 1pm, lunch at the Phuket Country Club costs 300 baht to join the happy couples.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand says the Baba wedding is a great boon to Phuket's green season, and it's a unique Phuket event that shows the island's culture at its best.
