PHUKET: Phuket's newly constituted Phuket FC football team scored a remarkable win today in a game that extended over more than 36 hours.
The Phuket Islanders were 0-0 with the Bangkok FC when a severe storm forced officials to suspend the game in Bangkok last night at the 25-minute mark.
A storm that began at the 17-minute mark quickly flooded the ground, making the pitch unplayable.
Phuket players took the field again at 10am today - and came off the pitch 1-0 winners a little over 65 minutes later.
New Phuket FC coach Rong ''Noi'' Ajanyoot, a former Thailand player who has revived the fortunes of the ailing Phuket club, was jubilant.
''It's our greatest victory yet, a real bonus,'' he told Phuketwan today as the cheering of Phuket fans could be heard over the telephone.
''The players have turned the corner. We hope there are more good times ahead.''
Today's remarkable away win follows another 1-0 away win last weekend aganst Chanthaburi FC that carried Phuket clear of the Division One relegation zone.
Bangkok FC were close to Phuket on the ladder.
Today's win gives them 10 points from the past four matches, sparking hopes among Phuket fans for more victories to come.
Phuket play at home on August 26 at 6.30pm at Surakul Stadium in Phuket City, up against Ratchaburi FC who defeated the islanders 3-0 away in May.
Given today's remarkable upward curve for Phuket FC, a larger-than-usual crowd is expected.
