Phuket's Patong beach, better for sandcastles than surf

Phuket Surfing Titles Set for Patong in 2011

Wednesday, July 13, 2011
PHUKET: This year's annual Phuket Quiksilver Thailand surfing titles will be held at Patong beach from September 21-24, the President of Surfing Thailand, Chanin Aiyaiarak, confirmed today.

The event is moving from Kata, where it has been held for two years, ''because this year's event will be much larger,'' Khun Chanin told Phuketwan.

About 120 surfers from more than 20 countries had already expressed interest and numbers were expected to grow, he said. A concert on the beach was also planned for one evening, he said.

A media conference will be held to announce details in Bangkok on August 25 with a second media gathering on September 1 at Ibis Patong, he said. Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha is to attend the Bangkok conference.

Crowds of up to 3000 are expected to attend the event each day, Khun Chanin said.

How much is it costing them to hold it at Patong beach? Is the move from Kata to Patong really because of increased numbers? Or is it because of the 500,000 baht demanded to host the event at Kata?

My question would be why move it to a location that has less surfable waves. Nice move.

Ah ah ah! This is the final evidence of how much administrator, politicians and presidents know about what they have to manage. On Patong Beach there are nice waves 5 days maximum par year, and only in a small portion at the end of it. Amazing Thailand....

You just lost a million dollar advertising campaign that runs all over the world .Talk about shooting yourself in the foot .

If Kata Beach is cost-prohibitive, then a sensible alternative is to combine the beach-breaks of Patong with the reef-break at Kalim. Well done Surfing Thailand and Quiksilver for not being intimidated by the greedy Kata demands.

Are we seriously supposed to believe that the contest is moving because it will be too big to hold at Kata beach? That is laughable.
Moving the contest to a beach that never get surfable waves? That is laughable.
120 surfers from 20 countries have expressed interest in moving the contest to a beach with no surf? That is laughable.
The Kata community loosing out on a fortune because of a few greedy officials....not so funny.
I actually can't believe quiksilver are even entertaining this idea. Ah well, TIT, have fun at the comp. I will probably be busy catching uncrowded waves at Kata.
