The Acrobuffos entertain a crowd: Phuket gets set to play in the streets

Phuket Street Show Fest, December 17-19

Thursday, December 2, 2010
THE PHUKET Street Show Festival 2010 adds new zest to the traditional ''walking street'' in Phuket Town from December 17-19.

It collides with the Patong Carnival that runs from December 150230, but the clash is intentional. People who come for the carnival will also have the chance now to explore and be entertained in the overhead wire free part of Old Phuket Town.

Visitors will find buskers from all over the world, with 23 engaged to do their thing. Expect to encounter street perofrmers from Australia, the US, the Netherlands, Korea, Japan, Brazil and Germany.

The highlights: an American troupe known as the Acrobuffos, best described as laughmakers, street players and knockabout philosophers, and the Tissue Act, who do remarkable things in midair.

The Korean circus group, Funniest, is also highly regarded. Look out for flying Brazil BMXes, too.

The overhead wires may have gone now, but there's plenty to see up above. And as with the traditional Phuket walking street, food stalls will be a much-favored feature.

Activities run from 5pm to 11pm on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Details: 076 212213.

bike show was held and entrance fee was 500 baht per person. I witnessed no takers for that price and numbers of locals standing outside the barricades due to high price of entry. Yet one more well organized and thought out opportunity for Thailand's exploitation of the masses.

Editor Comment:

500 baht . . . that's more than one baht per bike. What a pity they forgot to tell the media. Doesn't seem to take account of reality - for expats or Thais. To say that it's ''Thailand's exploitation of the masses'' is a thoughtless response, though. It could happen anywhere.

I went for a quick look at the street show in Phuket town and i have to say that i was very impressed with the organisation of it all. Event areas clearly marked and cordoned off, LOTS of event staff keeping the pedestrian traffic moving - even having one-way traffic either side of the stages. Sound and lighting was also excellent. Whoever organised this really knows what they are doing and needs a pat on the back, plus need to be given the job of organising or managing further events in Phuket. They did a great job.
