THIS SUNDAY the newly formed Phuket Navy League is holding an American-style 4th of July Picnic at the HeadStart International school in Phuket City (across from Makro).
This picnic is part of the Phuket Navy League's role in establishing strong bonds between the Phuket community and the US Navy ships visiting Phuket.
This all-day free-entry picnic will feature American foods like hot dogs and hamburgers, apple pie, s'mores and even a selection of American beers. Navy League president Jimmy Madagan explains that this day is for the children of Phuket and their families. Free activities like jumping play castles, egg-toss, sack races and soccer ball and hula-hoop competitions run throughout the day and mean fun for all ages.
The highlight of the day will be a Flag Ceremony at 2pm when US Embassy Consul General and Counselor for Consular Affairs, Mr Ronald S. Robinson, will read a special letter to Phuket from US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Other VIP guests include the Phuket governor's office, The Royal Thai Navy, and many local administration and police officials.
Of particular note will be the formal presentation of the Charter for our Phuket Navy League by Mr Bill Waylett, Senior Director of Regional Activities, Navy League of the United States.
On display will be memorabilia presented to the Phuket Navy League by some of the 22 US Navy ships that have visited Phuket since receiving their provisional charter on September 24, 2009. Visitors may even be a chance to win a tour of a US Navy ship visiting making a port-of-call on Phuket in the future.
Other displays will include some American classic cars, hot rod and ''muscle'' cars, and Harley Davidson motorcycles secreted away on Phuket.
Proceeds from this event will assist in helping the Phuket Navy League develop even more community service projects and relationships between Phuketians and the US Navy.
