Two young women practice yoga under the project in Rwanda

Phuket Can Help Africa's Young Grow

Wednesday, November 21, 2012
PHUKET: The Phuket community is invited to come out to Chalong for 'A Night in Rwanda', an evening of fun and fundraising in support of the Ubushobozi project in Rwanda, at the Shanti Lodge on Soi Bang Rae, starting at 6.30pm on Friday, November 30.

The project, which means ''power'' or ''empowerment'', in the local language, was set up to assist young girls in villages in the Musanze area of the country by providing them with sewing machines and teaching both sewing and life skills as a way to help them to eventually sustain themselves.

Proceeds from ticket sales to 'A Night in Rwanda' will be donated to the project, and the price of 600 baht per person includes hors d'oeuvres and two glasses of wine. There will also be a silent auction of products and services donated by Phuket people.

Many children were left orphaned by the 1994 genocide and Rwanda's families and children still suffer from the trauma of that time. Ubushobozi aims to help girls who have been orphaned, live in poor conditions or serve as the head of their household.

Many young girls cannot go to school after primary school since they don't have the money or there is a need for them to take care of the family. Ubushobozi currently assists 10 girls, eight of whom are near or at 20 years of age. These girls have moved on, together with some local women, to form a cooperative.

The project is now at a crossroads and efforts are in place to help the cooperative become sustainable so more girls may be assisted.

One of the ways the girls are becoming more self sufficient is by selling their beautifully designed bags and baskets in a small local shop, some examples of which may be seen on the website, www.ubushobozi.org

The town of Musanze is at the foothills of the Virunga mountains, where Diane Fossey did her work with gorillas. There is some tourism and thus opportunities for local people to earn some income from tourists.

For an outlay of only $700 Ubushobozi can provide a sewing machine, lunch, materials, a stipend and insurance for the girl and her family for a year.

They are also taught some basic English and computer skills and have the opportunity to learn yoga and local dancing, join local workshops on women's issues and get HIV tests.

Sponsors so far have provided some fantastic raffle and auction items including Twinpalms Phuket Resort, which has kindly donated a two-night stay plus a dinner for two at Catch Beach Club; Angsana Laguna Phuket Resort, which is offering day passes for its facilities, while Atmanjai and Naturally Balanced have provided vouchers for their healthy products and services.

Tickets are also being sold in advance at Shanti Lodge, on Soi Bang Rae, Chaofa West Rd, about 2km north of Chalong Circle. Should be a good night out!
