Food, glorious food, Phuket style, for 200,000 hungry people

Phuket Food Festival, March 19-28

Tuesday, March 17, 2009
Phuketwan Food Festival Preview

THE Phuket Food Festival is set to tempt the taste buds of thousands of visitors at Saphan Hin public park in Phuket City, from March 19-28.

The event is organised by Phuket Municipality and the food trader club in order to support tourism and local food in Phuket.

This year's theme is ''Save the World'', with booths and information provided to raise awareness of global warming and how to reduce waste.

Earth Hour is being marked by some Phuket resorts on March 28, last day of the festival.

All vendors at the fair will use dishes and plates to serve their food rather than Styrofoam containers.

Featured dishes include tom som Phuket, a dish similar to tom yam but milder, consisting of pineapple, morning glory, garcinia and fish.

There will also be plenty of seafood, sweets and other local food on display, as well as demonstrations on local food preparation.

Workshops on food health and Thai cultural shows will also be held throughout the fair.

As well as food and beverage stalls, there will be One Tambon One Product booths selling fabrics, clothing accessories and other local products from around Thailand.

Stage activities include student performances, contests and famous Thai singers.

Organisers hope that both Thai and foreign competitors will join the coconut grating contest, which will promote the traditional way to prepare a coconut.

An estimated 200,000 people are expected to visit the festival.

Scheduled events are:

March 19

5.30pm Phuket Food Festival opens.

6.30pm Opening ceremony speech, tom som cooking contest starts.

6.45pm Judging of cooking and presentation of awards.

March 22

10pm Stamp Band stage show starts.
