Dunking dinghies duck and weave for the lead in the Series II races

Phuket Dinghy Racers Outclass America's Cup

Monday, November 1, 2010
SAILORS at the second weekend of the four-part 2010 Phuket Dinghy Series were greeted with sun and blue skies at the Sailing on Phuket club as they readied themselves for two days of on-water action.

There was no ''the winds are too strong, we can't race'' like in the 33rd America's Cup. Sailors in the Phuket Dinghy Series are made of stronger stuff as they battled the whole spectrum of weather conditions over the two-day series, and dried off on the Sunday with a beach side BBQ.

Additions in both the Optimist and Laser classes saw total numbers up on the first event in the series at the end of September. Seventeen Optimists and seven Lasers took to the startline on October 30-31 for five scheduled races.

The blue skies soon made way for gusting conditions interspersed with dead calm during the first race, followed by rain and further gusts during races two and three.

Anapat Ngarmdee continued his five bullets in Series I with another clean sweep in Series II, and leads the overall series championship.

After a slow start, Pongpak Nunkhuntod took second place in Series II, an improvement on his third place in Series I, and holds onto second place in the overall series championship after count back.

Trading of places further down the fleet saw Tanakorn Patonma take third in Series II, following a second place in Series I.

In the Laser class, Wittaya Sangsui slipped up in race two in what was otherwise a faultless performance taking four wins from five and to win Series II. Winner of Series I, Chat Dawruang, took second in Series II to keep his hopes alive in the overall championship. Trairat Manthong, second in Series I took third in Series II.

Nuttaya Ngarmdee, older sister of Optimist series leader Anapat Ngarmdee, competed in the series for the first time and while bring up the rear, pledged to return next series.

After two series and 10 race each class, Overall Series Championship standings are as follows:

Optimist: Anapat Ngarmdee (10) Tanakorn Patonma (27) Suthisarn Keawnin (73)

Laser: Chat Dawruang (15) Trairat Manthong (27) Mak Sarawat (35)

The dinghy racing is an innovation this year in the lead-up to the King's Cup Regatta.
