WE ALWAYS suspected that North Phuket was radically different from South Phuket, and now we can confirm it with the announcement of the first North Phuket Culinary Arts Festival.
This event runs from December 3-5, which puts it in direct competition with the long-standing King's Cup Regatta. And clearly the northerners are aiming to inflict pleasure where it does most good - although this is occasionally subject to argument - in the stomach.
And so, after years of living at peace, civil culinary war becomes a distinct possibility. Draw a line across the island from Paklok through the Heroines' Monument to Surin beach. Send all the tuk-tuks south and the taxis and limos north . . .
It's spoons and forks drawn on either side of Phuket's tabletops, and separated only by a spicy salad.
We always knew those northerners were going to get uppity, occupying one of Phuket's finest beaches at Mai Khao and then opening one good resort after another. We suspect most of them are even registered.
Now they're banding together to offer something new. The first North Phuket Culinary Festival aims to beat a world record for starters.
SALA Phuket Resort & Spa joins forces with the Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa on December 3 to create what they hope will be the longest dinner table, spanning over 300 metres between the luxury resorts, from 6pm to 10pm.
On December 4, guests will be able to chill out and mingle at Infinity Sunsets by two more northern resorts, one an interloper from Greater Phuket - Anantara Phuket Villas and Aleenta Resort & Spa.
From 5pm until late, guests can sample cocktails created by international mixologists; enjoy a unique barefoot coastal BBQ served in the infinity pool, or snack on delicious Thai food from the markets stalls located on the lawn, and groove to the beats of DJ Charles Schillings.
On December 5, the Big Momma of Mai Khao, the JW Marriott Phuket Resort, presents 'The Brunch of Your Life' a bounty of sophisticated tastes from the JW Marriott's 14 kitchens served up on the beach between 11.30am and 3.30pm.
Now, if you are going to declare war, we can't think of a nicer way to bring it on. Our strategic advice to the northern GM generals is simple: Hit the south with everything you've got.

What does the photo of monks passing MacDonalds, not "southern delicacies", going west not northwards, doing morning merit rounds, have to do with a commercial food festival by western managed hotels?
The King's Cup regatta doesn't really start until 6pm on December 5th with Opening Ceremony, so this event does not clash. The Ironman race from Laguna on same morning may result in road closures about then.
The longest dining table record was much more than 300 metres: 10km in Istanbul in 2010, or 5km in Portugal in 1998 or 1.2 km in Spain in 2009....probably many attempts made but this event is just "North Phuket's longest"... and costs 1400 baht each day...
