THE BIG BUDDHA attracted people up the hill on Makabucha Day on Monday to chant and pray.
In an impressive candle ceremony, monks led a large crowd around the base of the monument three times, under the full moon.
The first time, the group prayed for Buddha, the second time for his teachings, and the third time for the monks.
The route up Nakkerd Hill has become increasingly popular, although numbers have fallen by 10 percent in line with the drop in domestic and international tourism.
More restaurants are now opening up along the route. Some Westerners have taken to exercising regularly by walking or jogging the six kilometres up from Chalong, to take in the fresh air and the spectacular views at the top.
Many other ceremonies were held around the island, with the Governor, Dr Preecha Ruangjan, attending one at Wat Korn in Phuket City.
