THE DATE has been set for Phuket's second surf lifesaving carnival, just one of several events that will focus this ''Summer'' on the feature that best defines the island's popular appeal.
Yessss, the beach is back.
With a promotion campaign going nationwide across Australia and possibly stretching even further afield to Japan and Korea, the lifesaving carnival will be held on Patong beach on July 12.
It's hoped the event will also make quite a splash for island tourism.
And it's an indication of the serious attention now being paid to water safety on Phuket.
The carnival will be flanked by three surfing title events that show how much fun can be had in the sea . . . once you know how to swim.
Over the past few months, five of Phuket's most popular beaches have staged lifesaving mini-carnivals for children, to impart water safety skills.
A carnival for ''nippers,'' as young surf lifesavers are called, will be held on July 11, with the adult carnival on July 12 at Patong, with registration for 80 events across six categories beginning at 8.30am.
Boardriding is also booming, with the Quiksilver surfing brand becoming the leading sponsor of the first-ever Thailand Surf Series, a progression of international surfing competitions hosted on Phuket through ''Summer.''
Events include the Kalim Beach ''Monsoon Riders'' title June 12-14, the Kamala Beach ''King of the Jungle''August 14-16, and the Kata Beach ''Island Crown'' September 4-6.
Collectively, the surf series marks a big step forward in the development of surfing in Thailand.
On the lifesaving side, the Phuket Lifeguard Club already has a sister club relationship with Cudgen Headland Surf Lifesaving Club in the Australian state of NSW. Last year's first successful Patong carnival established valuable ties with other Aussie clubs.
