North Korea's man on Phuket keeps the flag flying

AseanWATCH: Phuket Nuke War for Hillary's Turf

Thursday, July 23, 2009
A DIPLOMATIC incident involving North Korea, a slur or two, another day in the life or H. R. Clinton.

You have to feel sorry for Hillary. As US Secretary of State, she cops it from both sides.

At home and in Europe, the critics say she has no serious presence or influence in Washington and compare her unfavorably with her predecessors.

And then while she is on Phuket, figuratively waving the flag for the free world, those dastardly North Korean nuclear rogues call her ''vulgar'' and ''by no means intelligent.''

The issue today for Asean was the big one, the one that everyone came to talk about: regional security.

North Korea and its blossoming buddy-buddy relationship with Burma was high on the list. Calling Mrs Clinton a ''funny lady''and a ''primary schoolgirl'' was the North's latest salvo.

And there was a diplomatic incident this afternoon as the North Korean representative attempted to undertake a scheduled media conference at 1.45pm.

US security men were already in the designated room at Laguna Beach Resort, getting set up for a later appearance by Mrs Clinton.

The North Korean representative at the 27-nation talkfest, Ri Hung-Sik, walked in, saw what was happening, said he was going, and walked out, with members of the media yelling that they wanted him to stay to answer a few questions.

One voice was heard to cry: ''I want you, I want you!''

But it was too late.

The rogue state's representative headed across from the media room at Laguna Beach Resort to the Sheraton Grande Laguna Resort, and held his media conference there instead.

Mrs Clinton may have had the last word.

Having talked to representatives from Russia and China, North Korea's previous allies, she said that the recalcitrant state had ''no friends left.''

After the Korean War of the early 1950s, no peace treaty was ever signed. In theory, the war continues.

Expect a salvo of test weapons being fired towards Hawaii or San Francisco any day now.

And don't be surprised if you see propaganda footage that shows''Hillary'' being scrawled on the warheads.

Thunder and lightning swept across Phuket late today as the delegates began a procession of VIP vehicles heading for the airport and home.

Somehow nature always seems to say it best.
