So near and yet so far: the aircraft at Cape Panwa Deep Sea Port on Friday, May 2

Phuket's Sky Dive Reef Stays on Land

Friday, May 2, 2008
Concerns about dangerous weather led authorities on May 3 to postpone the consignment of the aircraft to the bottom of Bang Tao Bay until November

THE SKY DIVE REEF is likely to be on the seabed soon. Final preparations for a big weekend of action were being made on Friday at the Deep Sea Port on Cape Panwa.

By Monday, if the weather is good, most of the pieces of the jigsaw should be in place. The media turned out in numbers to see the final above water showing of the fleet on Friday

The last of the helicopters and aircraft will be sunk in an official ceremony on Monday off Bang Tao beach, where the fleet of aircraft will have their final resting place.

Secretary of the For Sea Foundation, Vittayen Muttamara, said the only real concern was the potential for delays caused by monsoon weather.

He told phuketwan that the idea was conceived two years ago.

Having an artificial reef would relieve some of the pressure that increasing numbers of divers bring to Phuket's natural coral reefs.

The idea has the support of Amanpuri, Laguna Phuket, the Cherntalay administration and others with an interest in diving, including the Tourism and Sport Ministry.
