Youngsters get involved at the Patong Lifesaving Carnival

Phuket Lifesavers Start As 'Nippers'

Tuesday, November 18, 2008
'' NIPPERS'' will be in action on Saturday as the campaign to teach Phuket to swim takes a few overarm strokes.

Driven by the wastefulness of unnecessary drownings, the team that wants to introduce lifesaving to Thai culture is starting at the beginning, by educating the children.

''Nippers'' is an Australian word, meaning junior club kid, ankle-biter or rug rat in the water.

Three schools from Rawai will be formally involved in the first Nippers Lifesaving Carnival at Nai Harn on Saturday but everyone is invited to participate and collect a prize.

The carnival will take place at the opposite end of Nai Harn to the Yacht Club.

''If you know of anyone who may be interested to attend, please pass this along,'' says Jayne MacDougall, a Phuket resident and one of the pioneer organisers of October's first Phuket Lifesaving Carnival at Patong.

Children aged between five and 15 can take part, with prizes for first, second and third in Under 8s, 8-12 and 12-15.

Events include a beach sprint, a board relay, rescue relays, swimming and a tug of war. The event starts at 9.30am and finishes at 11.30am.

There is no entry fee. Designed to promote water safety and an interest in lifesaving as a sport, the Phuket Lifeguard Club is organising the activities with schools, residents and swim clubs invited.

Drinks and fruit will be provided.
