The roads on Phuket always produce quirks

Accidents Outside Hospital Close Bypass Turning

Sunday, June 8, 2008
THE recently-created turning to Phuket International Hospital from the opposite side of the Bypass Road has been blocked to traffic.

Too many motorists were using the opening through the highway's central divider to make a U-turn into fast-moving downhill traffic, bound for the Tesco-Lotus intersection.

Accidents were happening, right outside the hospital in Phuket City.

Hospital officials wrote to the Governor, Niran Kalayanamit, and Vice Governor Smit Palawatwichai carried out an investigation.

Police, Highways Department staff and hospital officials met on June 6 at the Phuket City Provincial Administration Offices and decided the turning point had to be closed.

The turning was created solely for the use of people trying to access the hospital but drivers ignored signs prohibiting a U-turn.

Now drivers either have the alternatives of a U-turn at Central Festival or more than a kilometre away at Tesco-Lotus.
