GM Wuthipong Rattanawarunwong inside the Phuket Brewery

Phuket Nightlife Boost From The Brewery

Saturday, August 23, 2008
PHUKETWAN has been given a sneak preview inside the Phuket Brewery, which is set to open on November 21 as the island's largest and most spectacular entertainment venue.

We can also reveal that talks are underway to add a Supa Club venue, based on the successful Bangkok nightspot, at the Jungceylon lifestyle mall.

A Hard Rock Cafe is also coming to Patong shortly, a billboard tells us.

But the Phuket Brewery in Phuket City will be the big one, likely to attract topline acts from this high season onwards.

Having wandered around inside, we can say that the scale of the PB project is as impressive as the headline acts being signed to perform there.

Phuket's nightlife is about to get the big stage it needs to draw international acts to sing and play before an audience of as many as 1800 people, all seated in comfort.

PB General Manager Wuthipong Rattanawarunwong told us that construction of the venue was on schedule, with 200 staff already hired for catering and cooking.

To walk into the giant auditorium space, opposite Tesco Lotus on the Bypass Road, is to understand its potential for top-level performers, and for a large, approving audience.

On the second floor, walkways link audience superboxes to restaurants. Below, a huge space for hundreds of seats and more restaurants stretches out invitingly.

Outside, in a patio setting, another 200 people will be able to enjoy food and drink between 10.30am and 5pm every day.

''We hope everything will be good value for money,'' Khun Wuthipong said. ''It will be family entertainment, with magic shows and other treats for children.''

Carabao, the well-known Thai rock band, has been signed for the opening night. So now has Hin Lax Fai, another topline Thai rock act.

''We hope to have big-name concerts three times a month between November and April and at least once a month for the rest of the year,'' Khun Wuthipong added.

Booking agents are now looking on PB's behalf for suitable international acts to complete the year-round calendar.

''Phuket is popular with tourists,'' he said. ''The island has many attractions.

''It also has the potential to bring top-line international acts from the US, Europe, Korea and Japan here, whenever they tour the region.''

Supergroups and performers who generally make Bangkok their only stop in Thailand may now consider shows for the tourists, expats and Thai residents in Phuket.

The venue will be open from 5pm to 1am each night, with entertainment on a smaller scale aimed at attracting regular audiences.

Live music of all kinds will be a specialty, along with different kinds of food to suit all tastes.

The chefs have been hired from leading resorts, so prospects for the food are good.

A key feature will be the brewery itself, with a three masted sailing ship as the logo.

Security will be tight, with CCTV cameras and a staff trained to prevent trouble.

''We are 80 percent there with construction,'' Khun Wuthipong said.

The central location makes travel time not much of a problem from all over the island.

Parking will not be a hassle, either. Space has been allocated across the seven rai site for 400 to 500 cars.

The music will start soon . . . Phuket, get ready to rock.
