A van being checked by police: the coup command is proposing tighter checks

Vans To Be Required to Obey Rules: Violators to Face Jail, Fines

Monday, July 14, 2014
BANGKOK: The Department of Land Transport and the 2nd Cavalry Division (King's Guard) will call a meeting of passenger van operators, drivers and queue managers from Tuesday to Thursday this week.

The meeting aims to improve van service operations across the country.

Director-General Adsathai Rattanadilok Na Phuket revealed that starting on July 21, all passenger vans must display a sticker certifying that they are properly licensed to operate van services. Vans without these stickers will be suspended from service.

All passenger vans must not be older than 10 years and should only be able to carry 14 passengers at the maximum.

Van drivers are required to have a valid driving license before they take on the road.

The DLT is set to inspect van services nationwide to check whether they are properly licensed by July 21 and have complied with the regulations.

Van operators who do not have a valid sticker must terminate their services immediately. Violators will face up to five years in prison or a fine of up to 20,000 to 100,000 baht.

Great that van drivers will now require a licence. Some drive as if they have picked up the keys for the first time. Interesting that fines of from 20-100k can be issued whilst the Tiger Fire Team can only be done B10k for manslaughter if convicted. Time all fines reflected the crimes.

Again good news - the military are focusing on real issues. One of the main sources of bad accidents up country are the poor standard vans & mini buses. I have Thai friends who simply refuse to use them they are deemed so dangerous.

After watching on Youtube crazy Russian Drivers they all have cameras on the dashboard. Personally, I think this is a great idea and ALL public transport should adopt this strategy.
Insurance companies should insist on Dash Cams and so should the Public.
