PHUKET: Phuket was growing fast and traffic snarls on the island were growing with it, the Minister of the Interior, Anupong Paojinda, heard today.
Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong told a gathering of about 500 officials from around the Andaman that there were an estimated 100,000 cars on the holiday island and huge numbers of motorcycles.
Flooding was an issue along with garbage, the governor said. One incinerator was avilable to cope with between 640-730 tonnes of waste produced on Phuket each day.
The meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall is being held on the first day of a two-day visit by the minister to Phuket. Later today he will visit Patong, the popular centre for tourists on the holiday island's west coast.
With senior officials from all over Phuket at the meeting today were the governors of Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang, Ranong.
