Three protected gibbons rescued from Phi Phi touts will find new homes

Three Touts Arrested on Phi Phi: White Handed Gibbons Rescued

Tuesday, October 13, 2015
PHUKET: Three men were arrested yesterday for possession of protected white-handed gibbons on the tourist island of Phi Phi.

The gibbons were seized and will be released in a protected area.

The three men were allowing tourists to be photographed with the gibbons around Don Sai for 50 bht to 100 baht. Arrested were Chairak Nisamutr, 20, Anucha Bangsai, 21, and Abdulwaris i-Muesa, 21.

The three men are likely to be fined between 1500 baht and 2000 baht but police say they they are frustrated because a photo tout can make 60,000 baht to 100,000 baht a month in low season and much more in high season, so small fines are not likely to stop them returning.

Thailand be strong - change the law - mandatory 1 year jail for this and seizing of assets. What about tax also on all this money!
