Phuket was mentioned more than once tonight in the weekly national television broadcast by Thailand's governing National Council for Peace and Order chief, General Prayuth Chan-ocha.
The general announced a visit to Phuket by the Commander-in-Chief of The Royal Thai Navy, Admiral Narong Pipatanasai, on Sunday and Monday.
The admiral will be accompanied by a team from the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry.
The highly-placed officials will be gathering information about Sirinath National Park, where land belonging to the nation has allegedly been claimed by individuals and converted into resorts or luxury villas, or earmarked for similar developments.
A visit is likely to Phuket's sole garbage dump, where incinerators remain unable to destroy all the waste created on Phuket and where a toxic trash ''mountain'' continues to grow.
The scores of jet-skis on Patong and several other Phuket beaches vanish whenever officials visit the beaches. A decision has yet to be announced about whether they are to be banned, as the majority wish.
General Prayuth noted tonight that Phuket's beaches had been cleared of commercial operations and mentioned Patong.
''We have taken care of beach arrangements in Patong,'' he said. ''We ask for cooperation at every beach where there is tourism.
''If we build shops and restaurants onto the beaches, it would be unsightly and disorderly.''
A senior Army officer on Phuket told Phuketwan that administrators and Phuket's police have been told to make sure changes made by the NCPO remain in place.
In other parts of his talk tonight, the general said that the NCPO wanted to work as fast as possible to implement changes for the better throughout Thailand.
He added that efforts were being made to stimulate tourism in Japan, India, Hong Kong, Asean, Europe and China.
He noted that Thai Airways was ''facing problems'' and said that efforts were being made to organise more charter flights to promote Thailand.
I think if they dig deeper they will uncover many under-table-deals which facilitated land purchases. First on the list are properties which exceeded the legal height level restrictions, and why the law was not adequately enforced. Second, would be titles which were not intended for development, which miraculously changed their status to either nor sor sam or full chanote title. Third on the list would be the legal facilitators that colluded with the land office officials to expedite administrative red tape. Indeed many were involved with the rape of prime real estate for short term profit. Last but not least, land purchase/sale reform must be radically simplified and made more transparent. Lets hope the junta will execute a thorough enquiry, no doubt there will be many running for cover !
