Thailand Sees Surprising Hope in US Compliments on Human Trafficking

Thursday, September 25, 2014
BANGKOK: According to the Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs, the United States has complimented Thailand on its effort to solve Human Trafficking problems.

A statement by the Department of Foreign Affairs said the United States has paid a compliment to the Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Phuangketkeow, regarding the country's determination to tackle the issue of human trafficking.

Thailand was earlier downgraded to the level of a ''Tier 3'' country, which is the lowest rank in the US State Department's annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report.

The news prompted all sectors to expedite action plans, in a bid to meet the minimum anti-trafficking standards and remove the country from the TIP.

According to Mr Sihasak, US President Barack Obama has authorised the waiver of restrictions and the removal of Thailand from the bottom ranking, following the Kingdom's stepped up measures.
