Phuket World of People

wsj.com The Thai government - led by a military junta since last year - continues to chart an uncertain course on media controls. Last month journalists Alan Morison and Chutima Sidasathian were acquitted of computer-crime charges for citing, on their Phuketwan news site, parts of a Pulitzer Prize-winning Reuters report about Thai naval officers allegedly mistreating Rohingya Muslim boat people. Hmmmm

Bangkok post editorial: "police" and "professionalism", now there is an oxymoron. The editorial is quite correct, of course. Unlikely to happen as there is never any comeback.

Just today I have seen a chart with incarceration per 100.000 citizens. Thailand top 4 with over 500 people in prison, only topped by US 550, Russia and one country I may not mention. Germany by comparison 76 people in prison and pretty low crime rate too, much lower then USA and Thailand. Maybe locking up is not the best choice of fighting crime.

And as a side note. US detention industry is influenced by direct democracy while German prison system highly independent from politics and public emotion. Lesser time wasted in prison, lesser criminal education, more real education and preparedness to go back into normal live. But in a way unpopular "soft" on crime, trying to bring a human face to prison people. With a so much better results, then the indifferent lock them up here.
