The cabin of the water tanker after flipping into bushes today

Phuket Water Tanker Crashes, Flips: Tuk-Tuk Driver Trapped

Tuesday, April 15, 2014
PHUKET: A water truck crashed into three tuk-tuks, flipped into jungle and crushed a motorcycle on Phuket this afternoon.

Rescuers took more than an hour from 1.30pm to cut free the driver of the overturned tanker while a tuk-tuk driver was trapped in his vehicle for an hour longer.

The injured men were taken to Patong Hospital. The crash came in Pak Bang Road, Kata, as the tanker drive lost control after paying a visit to the Peach Hill Resort.

Today was day five of the seven days of danger, with just one death recorded on Phuket in the first four days compared to no deaths at the same time last year.

Seventeen people have been admitted to hospital from seven crashes compared to 19 admissions from 18 crashes last year.

A crackdown for drugs among bus and minivan drivers has produced three arrests, with all of the drivers to be fined 5000 baht and suspended from driving for 30 days.

The arrests came as a result of raids by the Phuket Land Transport Department on vehicles going over Patong Hill and at Phuket City's Bangkok and other provinces bus station.

Some of the water truck drivers are driving like lunatics at the moment. They seem to think they own the roads and that blowing one's horn allows one to drive through red lights with impunity. It's fortunate there haven't been more accidents.

Weight laden vehs of this type need to be driven with prudence and all due care being the case that apparently the veh hit everything else then rolled it all comes back to the person behind the wheel likely flouting road rules and due safety, the three tuk tuks cleaned up no doubt they will be the rolls royces of tuk tuk models when it gets to compensate me time.

@slickmelb: Would you please re-post in a comprehensible language? Sprinkling some commas or stuff like that might enhance the readability, too.

Beerchang, obviously you had nothing to say, so criticism is what you chose. I, and I expect others, had no trouble understanding what slickmelb had to say. We see this type of avoidable accident far too often, on what is a small island. Poor policing is a big issue and allows for poor, dangerous driving habits, as well as a high degree of disregard for the law, if we take a look at a much larger island, Tasmania (68,401 sq km's compared with Phuket at 543 sq km's), with a police force of only 1200 and a permanent population of half a million, there is a stark contrast to law enforcement and obedience to these laws. Is this because there is a difference to the maturity of a population or a difference in governance, of the two islands? Makes you think why the Phuket police are asking for more officers.

Interesting to see this morning that bad driving is not restricted to water tankers. Whilst waiting at the red light at Central I had the 3 minutes of my life to spare. Others didn't and at least 20 motorbikes, 5 mini buses and a car chose to run the red. I don't mean on the light change, I mean part way through. Much indignation was shown by one mini bus driver when someone dared to drive through their green light, cutting him off.

It's a shame that the truck driver was injured.

@ laurie thanks for the support @ beerchang I think attacking my use of grammer has nothing to do with the subject of discussion you added nothing in participation.
