Once the Russian man relayed the numberplate of the getaway motorcycle to police, officers went to the hirer's shop where the man who hired the vehicle had been required to leave his passport - and to list his address.
The result was that following the snatch in Patak Road, Karon, at 1.20am today, officers from Karon Police Station were able to arrest suspect Mario Arturo Tovas Ferras, 23, about 5pm at the Bonus Bungalows.
The police also had access to security camera footage of the motorcycle being ridden away from the scene of the bag-snatch.
Since passports stolen on Phuket were used by two passengers to board Malaysian Airlines missing Flight MH370, Phuket police now require tourists hiring motorcycles to also list their address on Phuket.
Russian Sergey Agafonov, 29, lost $300, 5000 roubles and an iPhone5 when the Spaniard allegedly beat him with a stick and made off with the bag.
Janpen Jara, who rented the motorcycle from his Karon shop, was able to supply police with the tourists' passport and his address. Mr Tovas Ferras was sitting outside his accommodation when police arrived.
Later, it emerged that Mr Tovas Ferras was on Phuket on a controversial Ed visa that allowed him to study Muay Thai kickboxing from March 8 to April 8.
A note he wrote in English to his victim made the point that he was experiencing many problems and asked for forgiveness.
I assume an 'Ed visa' is education visa?
I am amazed that studying Muay Thai qualifies as educational in that case.
