The one stop yacht centre should make sailing the region easier from today

Phuket One Stop Yacht Centre Finally Sets Sail After Two Years' Delay

Tuesday, July 1, 2014
PHUKET: The one-stop yacht centre at the end of Chalong Pier opens from today with an Automatic Identification System at its heart.

From now on, the movements of yachts that register at the 15 million baht centre can be traced around the region.

Phuket Governor Maitree Intrusud told a meeting yesterday that the move to the one-stop centre provided a quality standard and an international approach.

Customs, Immigration and Marine 5 officials will all be at the centre to smooth the paperwork requirements for all yachts visiting Phuket.

Work on the centre was completed in early 2012 but then followed two years of debate about how the concept would be staffed and who would pay.

The official title: Phuket Yacht Checkpoint Central System.

A restaurant has been suggested as an option to help the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation, which will manage the facility, to cover the running costs.

If you can afford to own/run a yacht, you can afford to pay a nominal fee of say - 1,900 Baht like many people have to do at Immigration in Phuket Town.

Maybe the officials need to have explained to them exactly what AIS actually is / does. Contrary to popular belief AIS is not black magic; You cannot be "traced around the region" without the boat having an AIS transponder, which is not a legal requirement in Thailand for visiting yachts, unlike in Singapore. I'd estimate at most 20% of visiting cruising yachts are fitted with AIS. Great, relatively cheap technology, but unfortunately sometimes misunderstood. I'd suggest if the governor was interested in improving marine safety then AIS would be a perfect addition to all tourist speedboats / ferries / diveboats operating out of Phuket.

To Bobby B. I expect you do not own a Thai flagged boat as you would know that the requirements are already quite high and expensive. Most foreign boat owners are trying to escape the tyrannical regulations of their own country and do not welcome even more regulations to trace their every movement in what is already enough of a police state. Also please understand that this AIS requirement has nothing to do with safety but all to do with control. The boats that should really have them are the Thai fishing trawlers that vacuum up the fish in the low season in the Similans and other national parks.

To earmuffs, AIS is primarily designed as a collision avoidance aid, the fact that you are tracked(or can be seen) is part of this. There is no requirement to have on a pleasure craft in Thailand, be it foreign or Thai registered. If you have it and you don't want to be tracked, then just simply turn it off / disconnect it. However if all commercial boats where by law required to have it installed and to have it turned on at all times we could go a long way in making the waters off Phuket a lot safer for everybody.

earmuffs, you write most "foreign boat owners are trying to escape the tyrannical regulations of their own country". In what reality would internationally agreed upon Automatic Identification System (AIS) devices be considered tyrannical? They are for the safety of the those on the seas. Would you consider aircraft transponders tyrannical?

can't see from the pic...where is the huge antennae/radar dish tower which is common on most vessel traffic control centres?
Guess Phuketwan will be invited for a show and tell of the management system?
