A grader razes an illegal building at Phuket's Nai Yang beach today

Phuket Shorefront Buildings Topple at Nai Yang, Mai Khao

Friday, September 26, 2014
PHUKET: More than Navy 100 officers and officials led the demolition by a grader of eight buildings on the Nai Yang beachfront today.

The wreckings at Nai Yang followed the destruction of a stand of restaurants in parkland at Mai Khao, further north on Phuket's west coast, yesterday.

The premises taken down today at Nai Yang had been adapted illegally from their original purpose of providing housing for poor residents.

Two premises were spared because the original inhabitants continued to live there, five had already wrecked the buildings themselves, and seven more are involved in action now before the courts.

A new fence outside the Xana Beach Club at the Laguna Phuket resort complex has been ruled to be built legally after residents protested to the local authorities, who called in surveyors.

As a gesture of goodwill, the fence was partially pulled down while doubts remained about its authenticity.

The fence, however, was deemed by the survey team to be on land owned by Laguna Phuket and can now be rebuilt.

Are there any plans to clear the rubble on so many beaches? Tourists in the coming high season will not like beaches looking like demolition sites.
