A man tumbles from a pickup during Songkran in Phang Nga today

Phuket, Phang Nga Suffer Songkran Deaths on Roads, Beaches

Sunday, April 13, 2014
PHUKET: The first death in Phuket's 'Seven Days of Danger' occurred today when a female motorcycle rider crashed into a sam laew motorcycle with sidecar this evening.

The woman, aged about 18, died about 6pm in a laneway running alongside the Siam Niramit show, off the bypass road.

On Phuket's roads, Songkran was marked by hoon big bikers riding up Patong Hill on one wheel without wearing shirts and police checkpoints slowing traffic to a crawl.

Elsewhere in Thailand, Songkran did not pass incident-free, as the photo above shows.

A snapper caught the moment this funster fell from a pickup in Phang Nga Town today. The man, we are told, was bruised and wet.

There was more tragedy amid the fun in the Phuket-Andaman region.

As Phuketwan reported earlier tonight, two young boys drowned in separate incidents on the beachfront at two five-star resorts in Phang Nga, north of Phuket, this afternoon.

An unusual death also occurred in Phichit province, in Thailand's north.

One 14-year old boy was electrocuted and two other Songkran celebrants were seriously shocked when a charge of electricity somehow passed through foam and water on a street in Bung Si Fai, a town noted for its large freshwater lake.

Officially, the first two days of the 'Seven Days of Danger' passed without a death on Phuket.

Across Thailand, the death toll reached 102, one up on last year. But the number of injured jumped from 838 to 893.

Sadly, authorities only reveal the figures during the new year periods. No monthly statistics have been provided for Phuket since April, 2012, when the Phuket Public Health office ceased its regular releases.

Most successful road toll reduction campaigns overseas involve the public being given accurate information about deaths and injuries and being inspired by authorities to help reduce the figures.
