British tourist Martin, 51, latest victim of Phuket's macaque muncher

Phuket Monkey Munches on Tourist's Arm at City Landmark Viewpoint

Saturday, May 31, 2014
PHUKET: A monkey who munched on the arm of a tourist at a Phuket City landmark viewpoint today has become a regular biter and needs to be removed, according to residents.

A British tourist named Martin became the latest victim of the macaque at Khao Toh-Sae Viewpoint. The hill is one of two that provide excellent views over Phuket City.

The bite was quite deep and the bleeding was difficult to stop, according to paramedics who staunched the blood and bandaged the wound.

While there is no rabies on Phuket and no cases have been reported for over a decade, Martin will require a course of injections, just in case.

He was giving food to the monkeys when the bad monkey bit him, the paramedics were told.

Today at a view point, I have a photo of a monkey drinking from a can of Leo. Maybe, the monkeys get drunk like many tourists do in Patong and want a fight... just a guess.

Feeding the animals, seems like he got what many know can happen. Do NOT feed the monkeys.

Nobody should be giving food to wild animals they become dependent on it, but then the tour guides get happier customers if they see lots of monkeys (and better tips) I have been going to there for years and used to be rare to see the monkeys only in the last couple of years since tour buses have been going up there and the shop has been selling food for monkeys.

In Penang, Malaysia, it is a criminal offence to feed wild monkeys - simply because it upsets the balance of nature & makes these wild macaques dangerous.

Feeding wild animals will cause them to associate people with food. There are countless examples of this particular species becoming very aggressive and a serious threat to people.

Authorities should ban such activities but because some can make money out of it, you can be sure it will only get worse instead.
