The man went to the Karon beachfront station about 6.30pm on Monday to complain about the behavior of the Kata jet-ski operator, Superintendent Colonel Werawat Jantharawijid said today.
''The German rushed off without leaving his name or even saying where he was staying,'' the colonel said.
Colonel Werawat said police had since contacted the jet-ski operator involved and the man has agreed to pay compensation.
''However, unless the German man comes forward, there can be no mediated settlement,'' the colonel said.
German honorary consul Dirk Naumann said today there had been no contact or complaint made by the man to him.
According to reports by unnamed witnesses, the German tourist had his gear run over by the jet-ski operator at Kata beach on Monday evening.
The operator drove an ATV bike onto the beach to tow away jet-skis.
The German man remonstrated loudly about damage to a motorcycle helmet that belonged to a motorcycle hirer, and the jet-ski operator is said to have swung an anchor in the direction of the German man in a threatening manner.
It's now up to the German man to identify himself and lodge a claim for compensation with police or forget the matter.
I am sorry but it sounds like another tourist who in a split second lost his cool and has not looked up Thai culture as he is not interested. Like the topless female tourists which is insulting for Thais (Thai law should be enforced on this, also who wants to see fat old topless ladies you never see Thai ladies topless as they know it is illegal) I always find it much more productive to speak calmly when you have an incident with Thai people. If indeed the helmet was run over I am sure it was a mistake and the German should have been cool and I hope the jetski boys would have paid him the 200-300Baht (About 8 Euros) for the cheap helmets that come with rental bikes. The Germans do have a reputation of thinking they are better than everyone else.
