The flipped pickup as paramedics attend to the dead and dying

Phuket Carnage: Family of Three Wiped Out by Overtaking Pickup

Wednesday, February 29, 2012
PHUKET: A family of three - including a pregnant woman - has been killed in a horror motorcycle crash on a notorious bend not far from Phuket's Heroines Monument roundabout.

The man who was driving the four-door pickup that collided with the motorcycle on the Cherng Talay road and four passengers survived unhurt when the vehicle flipped on its side.

The rider of the motorcycle, Supat Panyatea, 31, was killed at the scene along with his eight-year-old son, Wiroj. Jidta Panyatea, 27, five months pregnant, died later in Thalang Hospital, not far from the crash.

No helmets were found at the scene, in Srisoonthorn Road.

The wipeout of the three family members comes at the conclusion of a shocking month for deaths on the roads in the Greater Phuket region.

Five people - including four young Swedish tourists - were killed on February 1 by a fish truck a short distance north of Phuket and another five deaths occurred in a local bus crash just off Phuket on February 18.

Last night's collision came about 9pm as the motorcycle swung right towards the Heroines Monument. The pickup, heading towards Surin beach on Phuket's west coast, was overtaking another vehicle in rain on the treacherous bend.

The bodies of the family are in Thalang Hospital.

Totally awful, as for helmets vs an oncoming pickup truck - the chances of them helping in such a horrendous accident is next to nothing.
When will the Police do something and arrest people for crazy driving, and prevent these accidents happening, rather than prosecuting after the tragedy which normally involves just a fine.

Perhaps when Phuket has enough police, tbs.

@Ed... or perhaps when the police actually do the job of policing. We are all aware that accidents do happen, regardless of the location, but so many here could be avoided.

So much for the success of the 100% Helmet Wearing, which is probably less than 50% of the population abiding by the law.

RIP to the poor family.

I drive the coastal road daily and constantly, male Thai drivers are passing on a blind curve, or just cutting the corners Formula One style in my lane to save a few milliseconds and seriously endangering us all. Never seen so many dangerous drivers unwilling to share the road in a safe manner. That's the real Thailand IMO; for utterly selfish, utterly uncaring.

Just disgusting! Yet another careless driver that is selfish and careless. He walks away and a family is left in ruins. What's the consequence of his actions? I still believe that the only way to stop this isn't more police it's harsh penalties for these types of accidents. He is driving a lethal weapon and using it as such. Charge a few people with vehicular homicide, publicise it/make an example out of them and maybe others will think before it's too late.

The blame hasn't yet been apportioned.
