JUST like roses on Valentine's Day, prices go up . . . except at this time of the year, the rose is a pumpkin.
Suddenly, when demand is at its peak, pumpkins at the Vegetarian Festival become more expensive than roses on Valentine's Day.
Governor Wichai Praisa-nob said today that he will be looking at vegetable prices as the Vegetarian Festival begins from this weekend . . . and woe betied anyone who imagines their pumpkin is suddenly as valuable as a rose, or a princesses slipper, or a golden carriage.
All vegetable shops needed to put signage on display, quoting reasonable prices, at this time of the year, he said.
As for that other essential Vegetarian Festival ingredient, the firecrackers, local authorities have all been asked to make sure that large ''bomb'' crackers are forbidden from sale.
Skyrockets, too. The emphasis once again this year is on saving eyes, ears and fingers.
''If someone dies or is seriously injured, it will reflect poorly on the whole event,'' the governor said.
Sales of the smaller, popular string cracker are also restricted by law to licenced stores, he said, and should not be available from corner shops.
