Governor Nisit Jansomwong, who initially suggested a flyover for the airport road-Thepkasattri Road intersection, revealed yesterday that it will now become the fifth underpass on the popular holiday island.
''People on Phuket prefer underpasses because they don't affect the holiday island image the way that above-ground flyover do,'' he told the Interior Minister, Anupong Paojinda, who is on a two-day visit to the island.
The five underpasses that are scheduled to be complete in 2017 are the Central Festival underpass, the Tesco Lotus underpass, the Bang Koo bypass road underpass, the Chalong Circle underpass and the airport road underpass, which will cost an additional 500 million baht.
The budget to meet costs for all the underpasses has been scheduled by the Transport Ministry, Governor Nisit said.
The minister met yesterday with the governors of Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga, Ranong and Trang at Phuket Provincial Hall.
