PHUKET: The search continued today for a missing fisherman, swept from rocks at a Phuket beach. Forecasters said that small boats would be wise not to put to sea on Friday because of savage gusts.
This afternoon, with storm Vamco still dumping downpours along the Andaman coast, Phuket Marine Office 5 director, Phuripat Theerakulpisut, was not persuaded that small boats should be prevented from venturing out tomorrow.
''Let them keep working, run their businesses,'' he said. ''If tomorrow there is more very heavy winds we will stop them immediately.''
Khun Phuripat said he had staff at all the major piers on Phuket.
Meteorologists are predicting gusts of up to 50kph on Friday, the same kind of winds that have forced a ban on boats under 10 metres departing for Phi Phi and Koh Racha in recent days.
Weather warnings are current for Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi and Ranong.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has councils on 24-hour standby because of the risk of landslips and flooding.
The savage weather yesterday claimed 18-year-old fisherman Boonchew Tongdonmeng, who was swept from rocks at the south of Kata beach.
He was not wearing a life jacket, as rocks fishermen are advised to wear. A search for him today was called off when heavy weather swept in.
