His combination of compassion and a sense of humor won him many friends on Phuket. His Facebook page description of himself was ''Managing Director and CEO at Self-Employed Entrepreneur.''
He was happy to be a Grumpy Old Man and was the prime mover behind the GOM society's regular car rallies to out-of-the-way places around Phuket. Friends remember his constant contribution to charities, and the aid he delivered to so many after the 2004 tsunami.
One of his final appearances in public was at the celebration of life memorial gathering for radio personality Paul Norris earlier this year.
It is believed he learned about six months ago that his own life was likely to be shorter than he would have wished.
John Devenport was also a regular contributor to Phuketwan comments, where he inevitably had something feisty and usually accurate to say. Friends called him Little John, but in real life he was Big John.
One friend posted on Facebook: ''If any man should be met in heaven and thanked by god it is John he gave good advice over the years and his love can never be replaced he was very rich because he had so many friends who all loved him go to god John and let him make you his organizing angel I will miss you so much. A true mate. God bless.''
Many times I chatted with John, a truly good guy, nice and warm to talk to.
Take care John.
