PHUKET: Bandits on a motorcycle fired eight shots at the windscreen of a cash-stash van carrying 10 million baht in a daring daylight robbery bid on Phuket's main road yesterday.

The bullets, fired by a gunman wielding two weapons, struck the protective windscreen but failed to penetrate it.

The security van driver pursued the escaping red Honda Click motorcycle, which had three men on board, through Phuket's traffic but the trio were too fast and nimble.

Police all over Phuket were on the lookout today for the armed and dangerous bandits, using security camera footage to try to trace the three men.

The Honda Click cut in front of the security van as it passed the Tah Rua Chinese Temple in Thepkasattri Road about 4.25pm.

The van, carrying 10 million baht in cash, was on its way to replenish ATMs at Phuket International Airport and around the Bang Tao, Cherng Talay region.

Van driver Jiriya Sealim and companion Sarawoot Nucho gave chase, said investigating officers from Thalang Police Station.

The pair were grateful that the protective windscreen proved strong enough to withstand the shots.
