A Russian tourist identifies two suspected Phuket bag snatchers

Nabbed Phuket Bag-Snatchers Admit to Many Other Tourist Thefts

Sunday, April 20, 2014
PHUKET: Two men who admitted more than six snatches were caught thanks to security cameras after grabbing a Russian tourist's bag.

The last crime committed by the pair left Russian Mrs Lrina Shustora empty handed while shopping at the Kata Centre in Karon on Tuesday.

The two men sped off on a Scoopi. However, using security camera footage, police along Phuket's west coast went on the lookout. Last night about 8.30pm in Patong, the men were nabbed on the street.

The pair, Praporn Sombat, 29, and Choosah Konlong, 31, admitted to six other bag-snatches involving tourists.

Mrs Shustora visited a police station to identify the pair.

From this and other cases, the incidence of bag-snatching appears to be quite high but Phuket police have yet to issue a warning to tourists.

Along with failure to reveal such important statistics as the number of road deaths and drownings, Phuket officials have taken a step back from the transparency that was once the sensible approach for an international holiday island to take.

Lock them up & throw the key away. This has no part in a high profile tourist area. Remember the poor Australian lady who was murdered for a mere 2-300 baht in Kata Noi not so long ago.

The police need to get out & patrol as a more high profile presence to discourage this sort of crime.

On a very positive note, there is a new traffic policeman in Karon at present, every evening, who goes round making a very big effort to be friendly with all & sundry ... & has excellent English to boot. He has aroused real interest with his friendly attitude & approach.

Put em in stocks outside a very public place for a day, throwing of water buckets & rotten fruit allowed if jail isnt a deterrent maybe public humiliation is then lock them up long time.

We have had an increase in break-ins on our properties in Chalong. 2 nights ago when coming home around midnight, I walked on yet another attempt by 2 Thai men. I confronted them and when their excuse was laughable, took my phone and called the police. While doing this they sped away on their motorbike.

I gave detailed description of the men and their motorbike incl license plate number to the police but I got the impression Chalong police was not interested. Consequently I never heard back from them.

A serious effort needs to be put to capture these criminals and I know Thai police is more than capable if they just can be bothered.
