PHUKET: ''Many flights'' were delayed at Phuket International Airport today because of the haze shrouding the holiday island, with no sign of it clearing in a hurry.
International and domestic flights were bumped from scheduled times in and out of the single-runway airport. Others were able to land or take off after delays.
By early afternoon, all except one flight had yet to be rescheduled.
The grey smog over the holiday island and surrounding provinces of Phang Nga and Krabi has grown thicker and public health authorities have become increasingly alarmed as the young and the old become at greater risk of respiratory complaints.
Phuketwan journalists driving south to Phuket yesterday were surprised as the grey blanket of gloom grew thicker through Phang Nga.
Smoke could be smelled once the bridge was crossed to Phuket.
Today the haze disrupted the busy schedule of takeoffs and landings at the Phuket International Airport.
Flight 3K534 from Phuket to Singapore, due out at 9.54am, was rescheduled to 2pm.
Other flights bumped from departing or arriving but not rescheduled so far are:
To Phuket

The latest haze reading on Phuket at 6am was 163 on the pollution index, above the risky 120 level but well below the hazardous level of 300.
